Artists Talking: Mikhail Durnenkov

Mikhail is a playwright and screenwriter well-known in Russia and abroad and based in Helsinki since March 2022. He began writing for theatre in 2000, and has been working professionally in this field since 2003. He is a member of the “New Drama” movement of contemporary Russian playwrights. Mikhail is the author of screenplays and award-winning plays. 

His play, Lyhyt episodi sienisivilisaation universaalissa historiassa, was recently presented (February 2023) at Espoo Kaupunginteatteri with Klockriketeater.

His plays have been translated and staged in Russia, England, Scotland, USA, Estonia, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Turkey, Ukraine, Belorussia, Kazakhstan and etc.

He is a frequent participant in playwriting seminars and workshops across Russia and abroad. He has lectured at Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow Art Theatre School, and documentary theatre seminars. Since 2004, Mikhail has participating in education program Class-Act as a teacher. Since 2012, Durnenkov is an art-director of the well-established young-playwrights festival “Lubimovka”.
